Us and Them

There is no us or them. There is only we.

Regardless of the polarizing message that is drilled into our heads by the media, by the dividers, we are all one. We are connected, interconnected and one.

The same spirit that moves through you, moves through me. The same energy, the same love and the same desire to be loved. We are all made of the same organic matter and inhabit the same planet. We might look different, talk different, have different opinions, or express our faith differently, but these are small and superficial in the grand scheme. What you do affects me and vice versa – every action creates a reaction.

Stop buying in to the nonsense that we need to judge and distance ourselves based on the way we pray or vote.

If we want the world to be a better place it is going to start in our hearts and minds. Don’t wait for some big unifying force because it is not coming. Don’t wait for a disaster to get to know your neighbors. Tolerance, kindness and respect start with us – with the way we speak to ourselves, to our loved ones and branches out from there.

We were not meant to live in isolation. We need each other. Establishing healthy relationships, providing support and uplifting each has a powerful effect on others. And it is essential to our own well-being as well.

Here’s some ideas. I would love to hear yours.

  • Volunteer.

  • Talk to each other. Listen with compassion and understanding.

  • Introduce yourself to your neighbors. Smile when you see them. Welcome newcomers.

  • Visit someone in a nursing home. Read to them or listen to their stories.

  • Practice inclusion. Make friends and socialize with people outside of your circle.

  • Keep an open mind.
